I want to know what the difference is between 9% of 120% of (a) less 15000
and 6% of (a)


((1.2a - 15000) X 0.09) - 0.06a = m

Your formula is not giving me the desired result.

For example using my original formula if a = 200,000
m = (((1.2 X 200,000)-15000) X 0.09) - (0.06 X 200000)
m = ((240,000 - 15000) X 0.09) - 12,000
m = 20,250 - 12,000
m = 8,250

However using your simplified version if a = 200,000
m = 1.02a - 13,500
m = 204,000 - 13,500
m = 190,500

Oops, dropped a decimal in the .09 term. Try this:

0.048a - 1350 = m

insight into how you simplified the formula please...

(1.2a - 15000)*0.09 - 0.06a Original Formula

= 0.09*1.2a - 0.09*15000 - 0.06a Remove brackets - distribute 0.09 term

= 0.108a - 1350 - 0.06a Reduce terms

= (0.108 - 0.06)a - 1350 Gather like terms

= 0.048a - 1350 Reduce terms
